If you just want to play the game then pick any of them.
If you have NF pick Paragon because there aren't many good counters to their Shouts/Echoes/Chants

If you just got GW i would say make a monk, im not saying you have to keep him forever, but every player should try monking.

Anything!!! Try several professions to see what tickles your fancy. They've all got their strong points and everyone has a different opinion about what they enjoy playing most. For me, it's a Mesmer. But the important thing to keep in mind it's what YOU like to play that's important.

Its a nice idea to play something different like a monk or an ele, just to give you some perspective to see the "other side" of the game.

Ele / Monk / Paragon / Ranger

Meaning, one of the four, not all four.

I would say Ele or Monk.

My fiancée likes ele because you can see things happening, eg. Lightning bolts, meteors, earth whizzing round etc..

Or Monk because if you enjoy it it guarantees you an easy ride through all 3 campaigns.

if ur bored of melee - go ranger, necro, ele, paragon

wanna get a free ride on all missions everywhere - monk

if u have nightfall, IMO, dervish was the most fun class to play 4 me.

Go Mesmer / Warrior ... toke your armour up with superior runes... put all your attribute points into fast casting and .... axe mastery.... then run into battle with a warhammer and hit things with it. =D
Better still, run into battle unarmed and hit enemies. For extra bonus points, don't put ANY attribute points into Illusion Magic, and use Illusion of Haste to really make your escape interesting.

^_^

Which version did you get Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall? Either way try them all. When I got GW (not that long ago) I bought Prophecies and Faction and played every class through Pre-Searing, though Nightfall Dervishes are good.

If you have Prophecies I'd say start there, the learning curve seems better followed by Nightfall. I'd say Warrior and Elementalist are the easiest classes to get to grips with first off and as Coloneh said everyone should have a monk. Necromancer and Mesmer are brilliant classes but their skills are more involved. As for ranger I have friends that swear by their ranger, but they're just not my cup of tea, but hey thats just me.

You think this choice is hard wait till you have to choose a secondary class.

Started Assassin as my first character (because in typical n00bish style I wanted to play a Ninja).
Nothing quite like throwing yourself in at the deep end for learning to swim in a hurry. Funny thing is that, despite my having five other characters (1 Nightfall Dervish, 1 Prophecies Necro and 3 Factions chars of varying profession), mr Chae Soon the Assassin still gets 95% of my attention.

It might be tougher to get used to, but in all seriousness its truly rewarding when it pays off. Nothing like beating the usual public anti-assassin prejudice into bloody submission.

I'm going to have to try this build!

Anyway, I hate to sound repetitive here, but go with a Monk. Everyone needs to see what Monks go through, and it's actually a pretty fun class.
